JIM BROWN JR.

Jim Brown Jr. has had 50+ years’ experience in the leadership of mid-range companies, both public and private.

Brown acquired Hartzell Propeller from TRW in 1987 and has served as Chairman of Hartzell and related companies since that time.

Brown joined the chemical division of Standard Oil of Ohio in 1959 in a sales capacity in the industrial chemical business unit. Over the next 12 years, Brown moved up through the chairs in sales management and later general management as vice president and general manager of Sohio’s Plastic Division.

In 1972, Brown joined Austin Powder Company as Executive Vice President and General Manager. Austin is a manufacturer and distributor of explosive products for mining, quarrying, construction, and seismic applications. Brown left the company as CEO and President in 1985.

Brown is a graduate of MIT (BSChE) and a former Naval aviator.

JAMES W. BROWN III

Jim Brown III, President of Tailwind Technologies Inc. focuses on strategic issues including growing the platform, assisting in the management of Tailwind Capital and managing professional services and relationships. He joined the company (Hartzell Propeller) in 1993 following a stint at the law firm of Baker & Hostetler, Cleveland, Ohio.

Brown’s background at Hartzell included Foreman and later Director of Hartzell’s Service Center; Vice President, Parts and Service; and as Co-President. Brown has been principally involved with sales and engineering, as well as general management.

As a result of his broad experience at Hartzell, Brown has developed specific skills in:

  • The use of clear metrics to drive performance
  • Worldwide parts distribution from Hartzell’s master warehouse
  • Development and launch of new products
  • Risk management including product liability insurance negotiation in both New York and London
  • Structuring and negotiating long term commercial agreements
  • Design and oversight of a variety of employee benefit and welfare plans

Brown is a graduate of Georgetown University and Case Western Reserve School of Law (magna cum laude and Order of the Coif ).


James W. Brown III

JOSEPH W. BROWN

Joe Brown is Group President and Chief Operating Officer of Hartzell and the related operating companies. He joined Hartzell in 1990.

He has primarily been involved in operations, including manufacturing, quality, inventory control, information technology, purchasing and accounting.

Under the broad heading of continuous improvement, he has a passion for and experience in the principles of:

  • Lean manufacturing and waste reduction
  • Development of self-directed work teams
  • Cellular manufacturing
  • Enabling technologies of ERP and CAD/CAM

The rigorous application of these disciplines has been crucial to developing the capacity and productivity to meet the growth objectives of the company and has led to the broad development of a more talented, intense and cohesive workforce.

Joe Brown is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Middlebury College.

MATTHEW L. JESCH

Matt Jesch is Chief Financial Officer of Tailwind Technologies Inc. and Managing Director of Tailwind Capital. He joined the company in 2007 following 20 years of progressively responsible roles with Fortune 500 and Private Equity backed companies including the Mead Corporation, Meadwestvaco and NewPage Corporation in Ohio, Georgia and Pennsylvania.

Jesch’s background includes serving as Chief Financial Officer at NewPage Corporation, a $2.5 billion paper manufacturer. In addition to CFO, Jesch has served in numerous financial and strategic roles balanced by operating and IT assignments.

As a result of his broad financial experience, Jesch developed a working command of the following areas:

  • Merger & Acquisitions - led or participated in M&A transactions totaling nearly $4 B
  • Treasury & Debt - implemented and managed a complex $1.8 B capital structure composed of a large banking syndicate and tranches of public bonds
  • Post Merger Integration - key leadership role in integration of Mead Paper
    and MeadWestvaco paper with synergies realized in excess of $170 MM
  • Strategy & Business Planning
  • Operations Analysis

Jesch is a 1987 graduate of Indiana University with a B.S. in accounting. He successfully completed his CPA (not maintained).


Matthew L. Jesch

MICHAEL J. PISCATELLA

Mike Piscatella is acting President of California Operations. He joined Tailwind Technologies Inc. in 2003. His initial role was to energize the acquisition and diversification process within the Hartzell and Tailwind organizations. In addition to business development efforts for new aerospace properties, Piscatella is president of Industrial Tube Corporation (acquired by Tailwind Technologies Inc. in September 2004) and Electrofilm Manufacturing (acquired in November 2006).

Prior to joining Hartzell, Piscatella served as a division president leading to group president positions at Goodrich Corporation from 1993 to 2002. During this period he led the acquisition of six businesses for his groups in the U.S. and Europe. Prior to Goodrich, he spent 26 years with Textron Lycoming in various roles including Director of Operations, Director Spares and Customer Support, Director International Business Development, VP Quality and VP Overhaul and Repair.

During his 37 years in the aerospace industry, Piscatella has developed a global understanding of the aerospace business along with a network to match.

Piscatella serves on the Board of Directors of International Water-Guard Industries based in Vancouver, B.C., and the Presidents Advisory Board of Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.

Mike Piscatella is a graduate of Northeastern University with a production management background, advanced management training at the Harvard Business School and international business training at the University of Southern California.
